paint your own terracotta pot

The whole family can join in on the fun of painting colourful terracotta pots. It’s a great activity that’s sure to bring out imagination and creativity. These pots make wonderful bespoke gifts for all the plant-lovers in your life - and let’s be honest, who hasn’t turned into a plant loving homebody this year? The best thing about these pots is that you can customise them with craft items you have around your home - think gold leaf, pom poms, glitter, stickers or googly eyes - and the result is the perfect addition to your room or workspace.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED.

  • a terracotta pot

  • a sanding block or sandpaper

  • acrylic primer or gesso

  • acrylic paint + acrylic paint pens for fine details or outlines

  • paintbrushes

  • terracotta pot sealer

design your one-of-a-kind pot.

sand and prime.

Choose a terracotta pot from your favourite garden shop or hardware store.  Give it a light sanding with a sanding block and rinse off the clay dust thoroughly with water.  Allow the pot to dry.

Give your pot one coat of primer and allow to dry.

paint and decorate.

Paint on your design. Acrylic paints are varied and versatile - give neons, pastels, metallics and glitter paint a go! Give your pot two to three coats of each colour, ensuring that each layer dries between coats.

seal and protect.

Once your pot is completely dry, use the sealer to add a shiny coat.  This will protect your paint from fading and ensure your pot is waterproof. For a long lasting result, we recommend indoor use or outside in the shade.
